World-building
The science fiction author Cory Doctorow said “Science fiction isn’t predictive of the future. It tends to be about diagnosing our current aspirations and anxieties.” Likewise, world-building cannot wrest itself free of the world we live in, like a tether our imaginations are shackled to our experience of the world. One foot in the known one foot in the unknown.
The Spring/Summer 2025 edition of Sluice magazine uses the theme as a jumping-off point to explore our relationship with the world, and the stories we tell ourselves
about our place within it.
